Local veterans are holding a rally outside the Marin Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium on Friday, March 14 at 12 noon. This local rally will take place as thousands gather in Washington, D.C., and at state capitols around the nation to protest the devastating cuts being made to critical programs supporting former service members.  Sign up here to RSVP and to receive further details as they are finalized.

The plight of our nation’s veterans is well known. Many face long wait times, understaffing, and high suicide rates. They demand and deserve better healthcare and support. The Trump Administration and the wealthiest person in the world are determined to make our veterans suffer.

Hear the personal stories of local veterans about the importance of the VA and the need to fight against the draconian cuts facing the VA and other programs which serve those who served our country. The veterans will share information on what you can do to help protect them, and will be joined by local elected officials who are coming out to show their support.

Handmade signs encouraged but not necessary.  Ideas include "Thank a vet with services," "Real Patriots work at the VA," "Vets Deserve Better" plus any ideas you have. Sign up here to RSVP and to receive further details as they are finalized.

Let's show up in support of our local veterans!

Take an easy action to stand up for trans people!

There's something you can do right now to help us defend our freedoms against Trump and Project 2025.

The State Department is accepting public comments through Monday, March 17 for people to submit their concerns about the new passport policy that forces trans, intersex, and nonbinary people to out themselves any time they have to show ID. The State Department is REQUIRED to review every comment before taking action. PLEASE USE THIS LINK BELOW TO COMMENT BEFORE THE 3/17 DEADLINE.

Denying trans people accurate passports would expose them to violence and discrimination anytime they have to show ID and keep them from traveling safely. It would impact every element of participating in public life – from flying, opening bank accounts, to enrolling in school, and more.

We are not providing a script because individualized comments are most impactful. But some talking points include:

  • Since this is a budget proposal, it is helpful to  point out that this is a waste of government resources, because the end result benefits no one and harms many, including transgender and intersex people and their families.

  • Also indicate your concern as to what this information might be used for, when a person's presentation does not match their assigned sex at birth.

  • Please use your own language to make these points.

Donald Trump's transphobic, unconstitutional policies are trying to force trans people out of public life – but with your help, we won't let them. Please submit your comment today.

Thank you so much for holding the line and showing support for our most vulnerable communities!

THIS WEEKEND - LOTS of Marin protests

Local groups and individuals in Marin have come together to form a new, loosely organized coalition, Marin Action for Protest, to meet increasing demand by residents for opportunities to protest the illegal and harmful actions being taken by the Trump Administration.

As Musk raids the government and Republicans attempt to slash Medicaid, USAID, support for children, veterans and the most vulnerable Americans to fund tax cuts for billionaires, Marin Action for Protest is mobilizing residents who wish to raise their voices against the Trump/Musk coup and Republican tax scam. Illegal actions include the attempt by the Administration to unconstitutionally withhold funds allocated by Congress, and the dangerous agenda of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to dismantle critical programs upon which millions of Americans depend.

Numerous individual organizers and local groups including Indivisible MarinIndivisible Sausalito, Swing Left Marin, NoMusk.org and Solidarity Sundays. This is a loosely organized and evolving coalition. With some exceptions, the named groups are not formal sponsors of the various protests.

Impactful phonebanking opportunity to influence GOP Members of Congress

The California Democratic Party (CADEM) is offering a unique phonebanking opportunity to save healthcare for millions of Californians by influencing just a handful of Republican votes. We hope many of you will sign up for shifts! These phonebanks will be particularly impactful because they involve increasing constituent calls to Republican Members of Congress. This opportunity is a key way that those of us in blue districts can help move the needle on legislative outcomes.

CADEM is hosting phonebanks into three California congressional districts held by Republicans, asking voters to contact their representatives to urge them to vote NO on proposed healthcare cuts. The Republicans' narrow majority means a loss of just a few votes could save health care for millions of Americans. These short-term phonebanks will be held multiple times a day from March 10th through March 28th, and training will be provided.

Nothing will change if we only sing to the choir. We must influence Republicans! Take this opportunity to influence Republican representatives by signing up for these phonebanks and ensure that the most vulnerable among us will continue to receive the healthcare they deserve.

Stand with Ukraine and other Rapid Response Actions this week

We learned during Trump 1.0 that events which demand our attention and action will be occurring constantly. Trump 2.0 is FAR worse - chaos designed to overwhelm us and create feelings of helplessness. But we are far from helpless and will not give in. Democrats across the country are organizing in protest and resistance on a daily basis. We are standing up for those most impacted and demanding action from our elected officials. We are on the phones and in the streets, getting loud, and the world is paying attention.

IndiMarin is committed to keeping you updated in real time about opportunities to make your voice heard. Our website is a good source of ongoing actions and we hope you will check it regularly, especially the calendar page. Additionally,  our “rapid response” emails will be another way you can stay informed about timely actions.

Priority Actions this week - Please choose some or all depending on your personal bandwidth:

Stand with Ukraine!

The appalling attack yesterday on a leader of an allied sovereign nation by the sitting president and vice president of the United States was horrifying to all Americans of good conscience. Liz Cheney expressed the outrage well. "Generations of American patriots, from our revolution onward, have fought for the principles Zelenskyy is risking his life to defend. But today, Donald Trump and JD Vance attacked Zelenskyy and pressured him to surrender the freedom of his people to the KGB war criminal who invaded Ukraine. History will remember this day—when an American President and Vice President abandoned all we stand for.”

UKRAINE ACTIONS

  • Call your Members of Congress (MOCs) - Members of Congress must forcefully condemn both the behavior as well as the Trump agenda of siding with Russia over Ukraine. Phones should already be ringing off the hooks across the nation. Please call your three MOCs ASAP with the following asks.

    • If your MOC is a Republican - Say some version of, "Enough is enough. Republican members of Congress must publicly rebuke the President and Vice President for their behavior and agenda in the meeting with President Zelenskyy. We will remember what side you are on when we vote in 2026." Add your own personal reactions for extra impact.

    • If your MOC is a Democrat - Say some version of, "I call on the Democratic Caucus to host a multi-speaker press conference immediately to ensure strong media attention for the democratic response to the Trump/Vance attack on President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office." Add your own personal reactions for extra impact. Note: Check first via an internet search to see if your rep has already issued a personal statement and, if so, express your thanks.

  • Support Ukraine via social media

    • For those with social media accounts, please post graphics supportive of Ukraine such as the one pictured above. You will find many options by searching under, "I Support Ukraine."

  • We will keep you apprised of additional ways to support Ukraine as we learn more next week.

ADDITIONAL PRIORITY ACTIONS TO CONSIDER

USAID funding - Our partner Activate America has created a wonderful video and platform to call your congressional reps to demand that USAID funding and programs be restored. Scripts are included.

Tesla Takedown - Tesla stock is plummeting across the world. If you have a dealership near you and want to join protests on site, you can find details here.

Stand Up For Science - The cuts to the scientific community are catastrophic. Stand Up For Science is led by a group of professional scientists who were inspired by the March for Science protests in 2017. They are partnering with grassroots groups to organize nationwide protests on March 7. More info here.

Protect the US Postal Service - Trump is threatening an executive order to place the US Postal Service under his direct control, disrupting service to millions of people and posing a threat to voting by mail. This is illegal and unconstitutional. The American Postal Workers Union has put together an easy to use tool to call our Senators and demand they fight back against Trump’s USPS takeover. When you’re done with your first call, hit star to be put through to your next Senator.

Attend IndiMarin's Training on March 13 from 1 - 2 PM PT - "Tips and Tools for Calling Your Reps." Sign up here. If making calls to your reps is a hurdle for you, join us for an informational meeting to hear why constituent phone calls are one of the most effective tools we have in a resistance movement. Led by our experienced phonebank team, we will offer training on the "5 Calls" app which connects you directly to your Senator and House Rep offices, and provides a range of scripts. We will work in small break-out rooms and have time for discussion and questions.

Thank you for your ongoing actions to protect our democracy and the all Americans whose lives are being negatively impacted by the Trump Administation. We take heart and courage from the wise words of Governor Bill Pritzker of Illinois: “Tyranny requires your fear and your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage. So gather your justice and humanity, and do not let the 'tragic spirit of despair' overcome us when our country needs us the most."

Take action to keep DOGE out of our data

Our friends at the ACLU have created an easy and worthwhile action to fight back against the DOGE takeover of our personal data. Take action here and/or read on for further details.

Per the ACLU:

The Trump administration's so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been given unrestricted access to our personal data, a massive invasion of privacy that puts our Social Security numbers, health records, and financial information at risk of data breaches, mass surveillance, and more.

DOGE is composed of unvetted outsiders who have forced their way into the government's most protected systems without care for the safeguards created by Congress to keep our data safe. They are also reportedly using shadowy AI tools to decide what critical public services and programs to cut.

This is a privacy disaster that impacts every one of us – and leaves us vulnerable to data breaches, mass surveillance, politically motivated attacks, and worse.

The people of this country deserve to know what's happening behind closed doors – yet DOGE has refused to answer questions from the press, members of Congress, and the public, all while claiming DOGE employees are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

That is why the ACLU has already filed FOIA requests with more than 40 federal agencies to get a better understanding of how our private and personal financial and medical records are being illegally accessed and analyzed by the Trump administration.

But Congress has to do its job and hold the president accountable when he or his administration violate our civil rights and civil liberties. Join us: Tell your representatives to do their job.

Thanks for taking action and reminding our leaders that they work for us.

The ACLU Team

Thank you for your continuing actions to protect our democracy and the American people.

Video recording and other follow up to our 2/12 membership meeting

Happy (Not My ) Presidents' Day weekend! We hope you are finding some ways to unplug, rejuvenate and enjoy! Self-care is so important in these difficult times.

A huge thank you to the nearly 300 people who attended our Virtual Membership meeting on Wednesday. It was gratifying to have some many people in community together. Your comments in the chat, and via the post-meeting feedback form were very affirming about our current strategy for 2025.

Here is a
link to the recording of the meeting, for those of you who missed it, or for those of you who attended and would like to share it with others. Forwarding this email would be an easy way to share with your personal networks.

A key emphasis of the meeting was to outline our current focus on being a resource for our members as you take action in the fight to protect our democracy and the American people from the harms of the current Administration. In these challenging times, many of us are experiencing understandable frustration and even despair. Many are asking, "What MORE can be done to stop the destructive actions of the current Administration?" While there are no easy answers, we encourage our members to focus on one or two specific actions to take each day that resonate for them.

We have re-designed our website as a “roadmap” for each of you in your personal activism journey. We encourage everyone to review all of the pages of our website and use it as an ongoing source of information for the ways in which you decide to take action. It will be continually updates as new information and links become available.

Thanks to all of you for your ongoing commitment to our country, our democracy and the welfare of all Americans.

2/4 Newsletter: Postcarding Opportunity - help Susan Crawford win her Supreme Court seat in Wisconsin

These are hard times for everyone. Our goal of a just and inclusive America has never been more challenging, but we continue to be deeply committed to this work.

We wanted to let you know that we have a new postcarding campaign. It is supporting Judge Susan Crawford in her race to replace a retiring Supreme Court judge in Wisconsin and retain the court’s Democratic 4-3 majority. Democrats regained control of the court in 2023 when Judge Janet Protasiewisc was elected, as you likely remember as we wrote postcards for that important race. This new court subsequently redrew state legislative districts, resulting in a flip of 14 seats, breaking a Republican supermajority and giving Democratic governor Tony Evers veto power.  If Democrats can maintain control of the courts in April, they will be poised to take control of the state legislature in 2026 and be one step closer to reversing an extreme congressional gerrymander and gaining control of the House. This election is April 1st and the deadline to mail these cards is March 15th.

For increased efficiency, we are making some changes to the logistics of our postcarding program.

Please note the following new changes:

  • ONLINE REQUESTS: Our writers should now request addresses directly through the Activate America portal. This new option is entirely automated and will allow you to request any number of addresses and receive them and the script immediately! When there is a choice of several campaigns, our recommendation for the most impactful race can be found on our website.  You will need to obtain your own postcards and stamps. Request your addresses/script here

  • IN PERSON EVENTS: Joy will continue to host an in-person postcarding event for local writers once a month at Panera Bread in Novato. Currently this is on the second Tuesday, with two time slots, 10:00-11:30 and 11:30 to 1. All supplies are provided at a cost of $5 per packet. RSVP here.

  • PACKET PROGRAM: For those who wish to pick up packets to write at home, you can pick up packets at our Panera event. You do not need to stay for the event. RSVP hereso that we can make sure we have enough packets for you.

  • Future plans may include additional virtual and in-person writing events - watch for announcements in our newsletters and emails!

We are very proud of our postcarding program which has written well over 300,000 postcards since 2018 and are grateful for your support and enthusiasm. In 2024, we wrote to more than 28,000 voters supporting Adam Gray in CA -13 (who flipped this seat by just 187 votes), as well as thousands more for both Dave Min CA-47 and Derek Tran CA-45, who also won by very narrow margins. The resulting 3 seat GOP majority.is the smallest in recent history, severely limiting Republican power. You all made a difference. Thank you!

Please take care during these uncertain times and feel free to contact us if you have questions! We are always happy to talk to our volunteers and look forward to working together in the years ahead.

2/4 Newsletter: Fyi, letter sent by Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries to Members today

Dear IndiMarin members,

Fyi, House Majority Leader Jeffries sent this letter to all Democratic House members today. Please share using the Share link at the bottom of the letter.

February 3, 2025

Dear Colleague:

As we prepare to come back into session tomorrow, House Democrats will continue to push back against the far-right extremism that is being relentlessly unleashed on the American people. I write with an update on several urgent matters that we are working on for the country.

First, I have made clear to House Republican leadership that any effort to steal taxpayer money from the American people, end Medicaid as we know it or defund programs important to everyday Americans, as contemplated by the illegal White House Office of Management and Budget order, must be choked off in the upcoming government funding bill, if not sooner.

Second, at my direction, legislation will be introduced shortly to prevent unlawful access to the Department of Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service payment system that contains highly confidential and personal information related to Social Security and Medicare recipients, taxpayers, households, nonprofits, businesses and federal contractors.

Third, in partnership with the Democratic Policy & Communications Committee, we will continue to highlight Republican policies that raise the already high cost of living for everyday Americans, including the wide-ranging tariffs directed at allies that risk dramatically increasing the price of groceries, fuel and automobiles in the United States of America.

Fourth, Judiciary and Oversight Committee Democrats will detail for the Caucus the ongoing and anticipated litigation efforts to combat several of the unlawful executive actions, including, but not limited to, ending birthright citizenship, the firing of Inspectors General, terminations of federal civil service employees, the purge of the FBI and the suspension of funds appropriated by Congress. There are currently more than 20 different lawsuits challenging at least 11 executive orders.

Fifth, Whip Katherine Clark will host a Caucus-wide meeting that includes the presence of outside experts, enhancing our ability to unpack and expose a recently uncovered Republican scheme to Rip Off the American taxpayer.

Sixth, Chairman Pete Aguilar will continue to convene the Immigration Working Group in connection with our efforts to secure the border, fix the broken system in a comprehensive manner, provide high-level constituent services to impacted communities and defend the Dreamers, farmworkers and families who contribute to our economy in a significant way.

Seventh, House Appropriations Committee Democrats will continue to detail for the American people the federal funds that are at risk of being stolen, in the aftermath of our successful effort to halt the administration’s illegal so-called freeze by the Office of Management and Budget.

Eighth, House Budget Committee Democrats will battle Republicans at the anticipated legislative hearing where the GOP will unveil a scheme to cut taxes for their billionaire donors and wealthy corporations while sticking working-class Americans with the bill.

Ninth, our ongoing public safety accountability project will continue, as we detail for the American people the threat presented by violent felons who have been pardoned and released back into neighborhoods throughout the country, some of whom have a criminal record of predatory offenses including weapons charges, domestic violence and rape.

Lastly, we urge all Members to once again conduct district-wide outreach today, or as soon as possible this week, in order to connect directly with our constituents and discuss the challenges we are decisively addressing on their behalf. For example, I will conduct a telephone town hall meeting in my district this evening. We will track participation throughout the Caucus.

Thank you for your continued leadership during this perilous moment for our country. Together, we press onward.

Sincerely,
Hakeem Jeffries
Democratic Leader

Fighting against the darkness - next steps for IndiMarin

Many of you have been writing us in understandable frustration and despair. In short, you are asking, "What can we do, and what MORE can be done to stop the destructive actions of the current Administration?"

Unfortunately, there are no easy answers. For me personally, I try to compartmentalize somewhat each day to preserve my mental health, and focus on one or two specific actions I can take that day to fight against the darkness. It may be calling my member of Congress, or attending a cause-related zoom meeting of a group I admire. Or it may be helping a neighbor, or volunteering at a food pantry. I believe that if each of us strive each day to add light to our world that, in the long run, will overcome the darkness.

At IndiMarin, the leadership team is now reflecting on how we can best serve our members in these complicated and difficult times. There are so many issues needing attention and actions that are worthwhile. Our membership is varied, and our members have different goals for their personal activism, and live in a range of locations across the country.  So we have decided that the best approach is to serve as a resource and referral source, to the best of our ability, in supporting our members as they find their own personal path for activism this year. We will soon be updating our website to reflect this new approach and will host an all-member zoom meeting to elaborate on February 12 at 5pm PT/8pm ET. We hope you can join us. Sign up here.

In the meantime, if you are seeking more guidance on ways to take action, we recommend subscribing to these three Substack authors. They offer excellent perspective, inspiration and advice for constructive actions to take:
Jessica Craven, "Chop Wood Carry Water"
Simon Rosenberg, "Hopium Chronicles"
Robert Hubbell, "Today's Edition."
*Note that Simon and Robert offer regular meetings for paid subscribers which are informative and inspiring. They are a great opportunity to be in virtual community with like-minded people.

We also encourage you to sign up for the Indivisible National email list. They are showing excellent leadership since the election loss. If you have not read their new guide, it is a worthwhile read. Also, today at 5pm PT, 8pm/ET, you’re invited to join Indivisible, MoveOn, Working Families Party, and a coalition of other organizations for an action call. During the call, you will hear key movement leaders from across the country as they give us their best strategic guidance on how to take action against the Trump funding freezes! Sign up here.

In closing, I will say that many of us who have been intensively involved in this fight for the last eight years are depleted. We are trying to soldier on in the fight. Those who are newer to this work may have more energy reserves and will serve as welcome reinforcements in action and leadership. We welcome your engagement and will work to help provide you with resources.

I hope you find some of the above idea's useful as you work to add light in the coming week. I also hope that you will join us on 2/12 to further discuss IndiMarin's operating philosophy for 2025 and our support for your personal path of advocacy.

In solidarity,
Susan Morgan
Founder and Director, Indivisible Marin

"My goodness. What a day—and it’s not even noon on the West coast.

We woke up, of course, to a barrage of news, both about Trump’s latest set of purges—this time from the DOJ—and a funding “freeze,” which is both utterly illegal and horribly destructive. While I presume the latter will eventually get blocked by the Supreme Court, the short-term pain it will cause can’t be overstated. I’m already getting frantic calls and texts from non-political friends about everything from HIV grant funding getting pulled to NGOs shutting down. Senior citizens across the country are wondering if their Meals on Wheels will show up tonight; impoverished children are wondering if they’ll get lunch at school today. Trump’s EO is a mean-spirited, capricious, and pernicious attack on the most vulnerable everywhere—all to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

Really wild.

The “good” news, if you can call it that, is that, as far as the spending freezes go, what Trump is doing is blatantly, flagrantly illegal. Congress, and Congress alone, hold the “power of the purse.” Once funds have been appropriated through Congress the president lacks any power to withhold (or impound) them. Nixon tried in the 70’s, and Congress responded by swiftly passing a bill to ensure no president could ever do so again. It’s called the Impoundment Control Act of 1974; you can read all about it here. The Supreme Court has upheld and affirmed it.

In short, Trump has no legal leg to stand on here. The lawsuits have already started and will almost certainly succeed. In the meantime, however, the suffering will be immense. So it’s time for us to make noise—a lot of it—now. Lawmakers respond to a backlash. Let’s create one, and let it be fierce. I’ve done my best to give you good talking points below. You don’t need to say everything I’ve written—I found it difficult to keep these script short. The most important thing is that every Senators’ and Congressmembers’ phone be ringing off the hook all day, every day, until this freeze is lifted.

One more thing for those of us with Democratic lawmakers: It’s time to tell them to throw down. I’m feeling a growing sense of frustration with their docile response to Trump’s lawlessness, and I know I’m not alone. They need to hear it from all us. As constituents we have more power than anyone to push them into a more aggressive stance. So let’s make sure we do so.

I know this is hard, friends, but remember, Trump is overreaching. A lot. He is wildly overestimating the country’s support for him—it’s classic hubris. Remember, only a third of the country voted for him, and of that third a large amount did so solely because they thought he would lower their everyday expenses. Very few Trump supporters signed up for what’s happening right now. He’s overplaying his hand. It’s awful, and terrifying, and real people will suffer.

But this will eventually make it easier to defeat him.

So stay steady. Breathe. Help who you can. Make sure everyone you talk to is reminded that Trump is doing this to enrich himself and his billionaire cronies. This cruelty, the abhorrent stinginess, the sudden withdrawal of care for the neediest here and worldwide? It’s all. To pay. For tax cuts.

Don’t let anyone forget it for a second.

Let’s get to work.

P.S. — Please forgive any typos. This newsletter was a doozy and I was trying to get it out fast.

Call Your Senators (find yours here) 📲

Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.

First, I’m horrified at Trump’s mass purge of Inspectors General on Friday night. It’s in violation of the Inspectors General Act of 1978. It can’t be allowed. I’m also horrified by last night’s purge of DOJ officials who investigated January 6. Donald Trump has broken his promise to de-weaponize the Department of Justice. His first moves have been to punish people that he is in opposition to. Is this the sort of behavior the Senator swore an oath to protect? If not s/he needs to push back aggressively—now.

I also want to comment on Trump’s lawless, destructive, and cruel funding freeze. It violates the Impoundment Control Act of 1974. The money he’s trying to withhold—which is for everything from child care, to housing, to police officers, to opioid addiction treatment, to disaster relief, to foreign aid, and more — has already been appropriated. The administration doesn’t have the authority to prevent its expenditure. The Supreme Court has affirmed this. We have separation of powers for a reason. We don’t live in an autocracy. Tell him no. Thanks.

[If Democrat add:] Democrats need to play hardball. Please announce an immediate boycott of all nominations and legislation until federal funding is restored.

Call Your House Rep (find yours here) 📲

Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is _______.

I’m calling about Trump’s lawless, destructive, and cruel freezing of all federal grants and loans. This order violates the Impoundment Act of 1974, which created procedures to prevent a president from unilaterally substituting his or her own funding decisions for those of Congress. The money Trump is trying to withhold—which is for everything from child care, to housing, to police officers. to opioid addiction treatment, to disaster relief, to foreign aid, and more—has already been appropriated. The administration doesn’t have the authority to freeze it. Period. We have laws for a reason. We have separation of powers for a reason. We don’t live under a tyranny for a reason—because we fought a war to overthrow it. Tell him hell no. Thanks.

[If Democrat add:] Democrats need to play hardball. Please announce an immediate boycott of all nominations and legislation until federal funding is restored."

On this dark day, take an action of defiance!

Today is a dark and painful day. A joint session of Congress is convening now to certify Trump’s victory in the 2024 election. As is proper per our Constitution, Democrats will not challenge the counting of the Electoral College votes, as Trump and his vicious mob did four years ago.

Today, and in many coming days, our role can and should be one of defiance. Unlike the billionaire CEOs and much of the mainstream media, we will not obey in advance, nor at all, with the dangerous agenda of the incoming Administration. We will do the opposite.

Please call your Senators today to ask them to do everything in their power to oppose and thwart the confirmation of the four most dangerous nominees for Cabinet positions. Express to your Senators your dissatisfaction with the nominations of Tulsi Gabbard, Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth, and Robert Kennedy and ask them to take all steps in their power to block these profoundly dangerous nominations whether they have an opportunity to vote on them or not. (Feel free to add names to this short list as desired.)

Use this link to look up the contact info for your Senators.

Thank you for making your voice heard and encouraging your elected representatives to take action to mitigate against future harm by the incoming Administration.

The power of compassionate people (YOU) in the new year

Today, as we begin this new year which brings much uncertainly and anxiety, we are reflecting on all the goodness and love in our world that will serve as a crucial counteraction to the harms soon to be caused by the incoming administration. Our New Years resolution, which we hope you will join us in making, is to do as much as possible to prevent harm.

We are so very grateful to all of you for your many positive actions since we began our work together in 2017, and are grateful in the knowledge that you will continue to be a powerful force for good in the new year.

Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy and healthy new year! 💙

Year-end message: "Election Reflections and Next Steps"

Thanks to the many of you who joined us for our year-end meeting on Sunday, "Election Reflections and Next Steps." It was wonderful to be together, to reflect on all that we accomplished together, in spite of the disappointments, and to share some inspiration and resolve for our work together in the coming year and beyond.

We're sharing below a link to the recording of the meeting, as well as to the slides, for those who missed it, or who want to rewatch or share with friends. We hope you will consider doing so. Our electoral advisor, Laurie Friedman, offered a thorough and nuanced perspective on the election results. She challenges, with supporting data, the erroneous yet widespread narrative that Trump won in a landslide or has a mandate. Laurie explains why that narrative is false and we must help refute it.

We also shared several very short yet inspiring videos to exemplify how we, as individuals and as a community, can and will pick ourselves back up and continue to urgently fight to protect our democracy and freedoms. We closed the presentation with Amanda Gorman's exquisite poem with her breathtaking delivery. Many of you requested these inspiration links as well.

At the meeting, we also talked about our planning process for action in 2025. While much is still TBD, we are considering the following short list of ideas for our primary areas of focus. HOWEVER, we want to hear from YOU, our members, before finalizing plans for the coming year. Please be on the look-out for a survey coming your way via email in mid-January which we hope you will take the time to complete.

Finally, we want to leave you with Vice President Kamala Harris' inspiring remarks made yesterday to young community leaders in Maryland. In part, she said, “Folks have said to me that they’re not sure whether they have the strength, much less the desire, to stay in the fight,” she said. “But let me be very clear: no one can walk away. No one can walk away. We must stay in the fight, every one of us.”....“In moments like this, the true test of our character is how resilient and persistent we are to pursue the future that we all can see,” she said. “Do we throw up our hands, or do we roll up our sleeves?”

Well, we at IndiMarin intend to roll up our sleeves. We hope you'll be joining us in the fight!

Sending our very best wishes to you and your loved ones for the holidays!

With gratitude for all you do for our country,
The IndiMarin Steering Committee - Susan, Laurie, Betsy, Joy, Andie, Betty and Nanda

Extra credit: Call your Senators this week on key issues this session

Thanks to those of you who called the White House earlier this week!

We typically won't send more than one advocacy-related email in a week, but this month is a particularly crucial time for calls to Congress and the White House before the current terms end. So consider this request extra credit and call if you have the bandwidth.

Use this link to look up the contact info for your Senators.  Then, place one call and cover any or all of the asks below.

1) Express to your Senators your dissatisfaction with the nominations of Tulsi Gabbard, Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth, and Robert Kennedy and ask them to take all steps in their power to block these profoundly dangerous nominations whether they have an opportunity to vote on them or not. (Feel free to add names to this short list as desired.)

2) Tell your senators that you expect them to oppose H.R. 9495 and speak out against its inclusion in any must pass legislation.
On 11/21, the House passed H.R. 9495, a bill that would give the incoming Trump administration unchecked power to target any non-profit organization that stands in the way of their MAGA agenda. Now, the bill is going to the Senate for consideration.

3) Help protect migrants in the U.S. by asking your Senators to actively support the request of President Biden by Senators Padilla, Lujan and Cortez Masto to designate, redesignate, and extend Temporary Protected Status for eligible countries, and protect deferred action recipients via expedited processing and expansion of legal pathways.

Thank you for making your voice heard and encouraging your elected representatives to take action to mitigate against future harm by the incoming Administration.

Tick tock: Call the White House this week with 3 key asks!

The clock is ticking loudly on the Biden Harris' remaining time in office and important actions by this Administration are crucial to prevent/slow harm by the incoming Administration.

This action takes 5 minutes or less! Let's get the White House phones ringing off the hook with the following three priority asks of President Biden and his team. ☎️ ☎️ ☎️

The White House Phone Number - 202- 456-1111 (typical wait times is under 5 minutes and you will be apprised of your place in queue)
Hours - Pacific time - 8am - 12pm PT - Eastern time - 11am - 3pm ET
Days - Tuesday-Thursday

We have confirmed that you can leave three asks with one phone call and each will be tallied separately.

Ask #1 - Ask the President to order the FBI to being background checks on Trump nominees immediately
Ask #2 - Support the publication of the ERA in the National Archives
Ask #3 - Help protect immigrants at risk

Script:
I am an American citizen calling from (state) with three urgent requests of President Biden and his Administration:
1) Please order the FBI to begin background checks into President-elect Trump’s nominees immediately and work to expedite the clearance process for the most sensitive jobs overseeing the State Department, Defense Department, Health and Human Services, and all national intelligence appointments including the CIA, FBI and Homeland Security; 2) please give notice to the National Archivist to formally publish and certify the ERA as the 28th Amendment; and 3) Take the actions requested by Senators Padilla, Lujan and Cortez Masto and designate, redesignate, and extend Temporary Protected Status for eligible countries, and protect deferred action recipients via expedited processing and expansion of legal pathways.
I appreciate having all three of these important asks be noted for the President's urgent attention! Thank you.

Background on Ask #1 - Ask for FBI background checks on Trump nominees immediately.
This one is obvious on its face.

Background on Ask #2 - Support the publication of the ERA in the National Archives
Indivisible has joined the “Biden Publish the ERA” alliance, a coalition of organizations and medical associations urging President Biden to enshrine gender equality into our Constitution by publishing the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA has cleared the threshold for ratification, but it’s been held up because of GOP opposition and legal debates. By publishing the ERA, the Biden-Harris Administration can put guardrails on the incoming Trump Administration and provide a critical tool for combating discrimination against women, girls, and LGBTQ+ people nationwide.

Background on Ask #3 - Help protect immigrants at risk
Three Latino Democratic Senators, including California's Senator, Alex Padilla, Cortez Masto (D-NV), Lujan (D-NM) are calling on the Biden administration have sent letter that calls on President Biden to “act decisively,” to help protect Dreamers and TPS holders during President Biden’s remaining weeks in office. Let's elevate this important ask of these leading Senators!

Wasn't that easy? Thanks for taking action!

Sign up for our 12/15 All-Member Virtual Meeting!

While many volunteers, ourselves included, needed some time to rest and regroup after the disappointment of the election, we are already hearing from our members that they're ready to get to work. And that's exactly what we're doing! "We the People" at IndiMarin are in this for the long game

In that spirit, we hope you will join our Leadership Team on Sunday, December 15, at 4pm PT/7pm ET via Zoom for an all-member meeting, "Election Reflections and Next Steps." Sign up here.

We'll gather to reflect on and applaud on all that we accomplished together in 2024. We'll provide specifics about the races on which we worked and the results. We'll also talk about IndiMarin's initial thinking about next steps. The specifics are still a work-in-progress and will remain so for another couple of months as we monitor developments with the incoming Administration and new Congress. But we DO know that we will continue to work toward our ongoing mission: "Taking action to help build a more just, caring and inclusive America." At the meeting, we will share with you our early thoughts on the next phase of our work together.

One thing is perfectly clear - we have power when we act collectively and in community.

We hope to see you on the 12/15 and look forward to working with you in the ongoing fight to protect America's democracy and personal freedoms. Sign up here.
