We wrote you twice over the last week asking you to call your Congressperson to ask that they vote NO on a terrible bill, HR9495, which would grant Donald Trump unilateral power to investigate and effectively shut down any tax-exempt organization based on an accusation of wrongdoing. The legislation is opposed by over 130 groups, including ACLU, Brennan Center, Planned Parenthood, Public Citizen, AFT, NEA, LCV, CAP, Indivisible, NAACP, Reproductive Freedom for All, and National Women’s Law Center. We heard from MANY of you that you made these calls (THANK YOU!) and we want to send a positive update today.
While the bill did pass today, 219-184, calls from constituents led 39 more House members to vote NO. There was only 15 Dem defections compared to 52 last week. Per the ACLU, "Offices definitely felt the pressure and while we lost the vote I think we’ve won the larger battle in that this is now seen as partisan/controversial enough that it’s not going to be very easy to move in the Senate before the end of the year. We really appreciate all the work everyone put in and we’ve made quite a bit of progress on this since the first vote where only 11 members voted no."
See the list below for the remaining Dems who still voted YES, and, importantly, the list of Dems who switched their vote from YES to NO. If your representative is on the list of those who flipped, calls to thank them help build our relationships further for additional advocacy down the road AND is just a nice thing to do:)
